I am no Jedi
As you have likely gathered from some of my previous posts or yoga classes, I’m a bit of a Star Wars fan. Some might use the word obsessed. I can quote movies and shows, and have philosophical discussions on the arcs of many characters.
One of the lessons that I draw from Star Wars is the variety of leadership styles that each of the characters presents. Anakin Skywalker presents himself as a rebellious leader and (SPOILER ALERT) turns into a directive leader as he becomes Darth Vader. Yoda leads in a democratic style. If you were looking for strategy, you should turn towards Mace Windu.
Of all of these characters, the one whose style inspires me the most is Ahsoka Tano. Ahsoka was the padawan learner of Anakin Skywalker. She left the Jedi Order during the Clone Wars, but she fully embodies what it means to be a Jedi. This move is inspiring as it demonstrates the importance of adhering to one’s own values and going your own way. As a leader, one must stick to their beliefs and ethics, even if it is a hard thing to do.
Ahsoka presents herself as fearless- ever willing to take risks. She maintains a willingness to go the extra mile to help those who need it and fight for what is right. This behavior reminds me that my leadership isn’t about me- it is about those that I support and serve in my role.
In a demonstration of her ability to inspire others, Ahsoka shares one of my favorite quotes:
“You don’t have to carry a sword to be powerful. Some leaders' strength is inspiring others.”
This quote is a reminder that one does not need to lead through power or title. One is a leader by influencing and inspiring change in those around them. It is truly a representation of my personal philosophy. Whether I am the “big L” or “little L” leader in a situation, I have the responsibility to demonstrate my leadership by lifting up, empowering, and motivating others.
How might you inspire someone today?
